WHAT IS AN ALLERGY?

The word "allergy" comes from the Greek word "allos," which means "other."  It was first used in 1906 to refer to an "altered reaction" by the body's immune system.  The altered physiological reactions occur when the body comes in contact with an allergen, either through skin contact, inhalation, injection or ingestion.  While the allergen in and of itself is harmless, the immune system inaccurately perceives the allergen as harmful and initiates a cascade of events- histamines and other biochemical signals- in response to the perceived threat.  The release of these cellular chemicals cause symptoms which includes hives, wheezing, digestive disturbances, fatigue, acid reflux or disruptions in concentration and attention.
